The public streets of Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest areas, are lined with traditional craft shops and cafés. The historic No. 28 tram, packed with passengers, winds its way through Alfama and up to the 11th-century São Jorge Castle. Views from the Miradouro da Graça extend over the city and the Tagus River.

The Ascensor da Bica or, more commonly, Elevador da Bica, is one of the most picturesque funiculars in Lisbon and has been connecting Cais do Sodré and Bairro Alto for almost 130 years.
The viewpoint is located in front of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte. From here you can see, to the south, the Mar da Palha, the Castelo de São Jorge, part of downtown Lisbon and the estuary of the River Tagus, to the west, from Bairro Alto to the Parque Florestal de Monsanto and, to the north, the valley of Avenida Almirante Reis.
